Blood Moon is a dramatic, atmospheric red palette modeled on the precise color arc of a total lunar eclipse — one of nature's most striking light phenomena, where the moon turns deep red as it passes through Earth's shadow. The palette begins in near-absolute darkness (Maroon, a red so deep it reads as black), moves through Garnet and Crimson Moon, and warms as it lightens through Sienna Red and Lunar Peach — mirroring the progression from the moon's fully shadowed core to its illuminated edge.

The key characteristic of this palette is the shift from red toward orange as it lightens, which is physically accurate to the eclipse effect — the reddish-orange of a blood moon comes from refracted sunlight bending around Earth's atmosphere. This creates a palette with a natural warmth gradient that feels both dramatic and coherent.

Blood Moon is well-suited to gaming, horror, and thriller design contexts where dramatic tension is the goal. But it also works in more unexpected places: spirits and whiskey branding (particularly aged, dark spirits), artisan hot sauce and spicy food packaging, and any project that wants a dark red palette with depth and narrative. The near-black Maroon functions as a rich alternative to pure black for backgrounds and type.

In UI design, this palette creates a striking dark-mode aesthetic without resorting to neutral grays. Using Maroon as a background with Crimson Moon accents and Lunar Peach for highlighted elements creates a palette that's visually distinctive and memorable while remaining legible and navigable. The warm orange direction of the lighter tones prevents the coldness that can make dark UIs feel sterile.
